Winter Layers

The colder the weather, the more layers you need....makeup layers. Huh? Stick with me! Cold weather often constitutes dry skin with a dull appearance and even a phantom-looking face if you don't fake bake or spray tan. To counteract the lovely effects of winter weather, you need to apply the proper layers.

After using a creamy cleanser with light exfoliant (this is my current favorite), follow these six simple steps...

1) Moisturizer
In the winter, your skin craves more moisture. If you have dry skin, opt for a heavier moisturizer than what I'm using above. I have normal skin, not dry or oily. This is Boscia's Oil-Free Daily Hydration w/ SPF 15 which I'm not 100% in love with, but I just want to use it up to go back to my tried-and-true Clinique daily moisturizer. Remember to use a formula with SPF of atleast 15! You are still open to harsh rays in the winter months.

2) Primer
This beauty product is argued over its validity but, from firsthand use for years, it's a face changer! This is by far my favorite primer, Smashbox's Photo Finish Light. Smashbox also has a hydrating version, as well as several color-correction kinds, for different skin needs. Wait a few minutes for your moisturizer to sink in before applying a primer. I use my fingers for this step, because I feel like the warmth of my body heat really helps to blend in the product.
3) Contour
This palette- from Smashbox- has my contour color, bronzer, and highlighter all in one. If you do not own this, no worries! I think it was limited edition anyway, because I can't find it for purchase anywhere. Boo. Just apply your bronzer and highlighter like usual for step three. With this palette, I like to use an Elle brand contour brush. It's angled and soft without being too stiff or too fluffy.
4) Concealer
I like to apply this step before my foundation, but you can switch steps four and five if you prefer. This is one of my "holy grail" products (meaning "love, love, love so much forever and ever Amen"). It's "Boiing!" from Benefit and is the only concealer that covers and stays put for me. Kind of gross, but I have a burst blood vessel underneath my left eye from when I was pregnant with our son. He's now four...and it's never gone away or cleared up. This stuff hides it! I also like to use my fingers to apply/blend my concealer.
5) Foundation
This step is key for winter! What you want is a foundation that has added "luminosity". The beauty industry has recently introduced this added perk to foundations (like YSL's Le Teint Touche Eclat, inspired by the line's adored Touche Eclat under-eye brightener). This perfecting luminous foundation from Sonia Kashuk is great as is Stila's Illuminating Liquid Foundation. I vary between the two depending on the amount of coverage I want. With foundation, I use my fingers to first apply the product then either a foundation brush or Beauty Blender to buff into my skin for an airbrush effect.
6) Powder
Some powders dry the skin out (or atleast make it appear that way); however, this microfine HD finishing powder from Makeup Forever does the exact opposite. It gives skin a flawless, finished look as well as sets it for the day/night whatevas! I apply just a little of this with my ginormous Sephora Collection powder brush.
